1:10 to 1:1 Project

For my Macro Photography class we picked an object that was "about football-sized" to photograph in a series from 1:10 to 1:1. I used a 105mm AF Nikkor lens. It was exposed at f/22 for 3 seconds for the 1:10 and 2 seconds for the 1:1.

Glass bead

This doughnut shaped glass bead was photographed with a 60mm Nikkor lens at 1:1. I used a copy stand to back light the bead, but the side lights were not illuminated. Exposed at f/32 at 1/4th of a second.

These are dried chickpeas with a lettuce background. Shot using a copy stand, side lit on both sides at slightly more than 1/2 power. It was shot at f32 at 3/4ths of a second and the magnification is 1:1.

This is a turnip that I shot using a copy stand. I turned the side lights to half power. Like the chickpeas, It was shot at F32 at 3/4ths of a second and the magnification is 1:1.

I took this picture with a 55mm lens and an extention tube, which gave a magnification of 1:1. I am lucky to have such a sweet cat who doesn't mind being flashed with an SB900. Well, OK he started to get tired after the first ten attempts. Its hard to shoot macro without a tripod!

Macro Metal

To capture my subjects I used a D300 with a 60mm Nikkor lens, a lens stage, a tripod and cable release, and white and black fill cards. For lighting I used a mini hot light and a diffusion screen. Both images are 1:2, captured at F22.

First Video Attempt

For our assignment we were given an MP3 file of a Thom Yorke song. The only requirements were that we include at least 30 seconds of the Yorke song and the total video had to be 1 min to 1.5 minutes. I photographed many sheets of paper using a flash and then added them to IMOVIE at .3 sec intervals. I repeated the color sequence a few times. For the sound I took samples of the song that I liked and tried my best to blend them together. I was not happy with the results because I was unable to match beats using the software and a discerning ear can tell where the audio clips are repeated.

This was shot with a D300 AND 60mm AF Nikkor lens. It was shot at 1:1 magnification at f/16 at 1/20s. I used a halo light and a white door for fill.

Macro rocks!

These rocks were collected on a trip to Yellowstone Park. I used my D300 with a 60mm AF Nikkor lens. I also used a lens stage for the first time, to move the camera forwards and backwards without adjusting the focal length. I shot this picture at 1:1 magnification at f/16 at 1/45s. I used a halo light and a white door for fill.

Yoga Pose

I photographed one of my childhood friends for a portrait lighting portfolio piece. She is in the process of starting her own yoga business. She offered many exquisite poses but I chose this one because it showcased her pretty face. I used a broncolor with a softbox, and one with an umbrella. D300, 180-200 variable AP.

Hurrell Re-creation

For this Hurrell re-creation I dressed my very accommodating model in an evening gown and put her hair up in ringlets. I used one carefully placed mini hot light on a boom stand to light this picture. D300 with 18-200 variable AP lens.

These roses are from my mother's garden. I photographed them in a pretty vase for my object lighting glass assignment. I used a light underneath plexiglass and a boom light to illuminate the flowers. Shot with D300 and a 105 AF Macro lens. Feedback appreciated.

"Technoid"-ish

This image was shot for my object lighting "Technoid" project. I used a blue gel under plexiglass and a pink gel that bounced off of a white wall behind bubble wrap that I misted with black spray paint. There is also an accent light on the phone. Shot with Nikon D300 and a 105 AF macro lens.

This image was taken at the Pisgah Covered Bridge as the sun was setting. After the image was processed in Photomatix I did a lot of dodging and burning using layers in Photoshop. I am happy with the result. Shot with tripod, cable release, Nikon D300 and 18-200 lens.

This is an image I shot on the Highline Trail in Glacier National Park. It was a foggy day so the views weren't spectacular, but I loved the atmosphere the fog created. I also noticed that I am always drawn to taking pictures of walkways/pathways. Shot with Nikon D300 and 18-200 lens.

This is my panoramic of the Old Well in the center of UNC campus. I shot it very carefully so I didn't have to do much in Photoshop except dodge/burn, sharpen, and color enhancements. Shot with a tripod, cable release, D300 and a 24-85 2.8 lens. I would appreciate any comments and/or suggestions for improvements.

Asheboro Safari

Today the Bio kids went to bustling downtown Asheboro to shoot pictures. The pictures we shot were supposed to be rather abstract and the emphasis was on design, not subject matter. It was a very creative afternoon. Ultimately I submitted my photos in grey scale. Shot with D300 and 18-200 variable aperture lens.

Pharmaceutical Project

This image was shot for Bio object lighting. I attempted to create a mood/atmosphere that would sell (or not sell) the pharm. product. With my image I attempted to convey a certain sense of distaste in the viewer. I desaturated the bright red cloth to emphasize the pills more, and the direction of the spoon should dictate the interaction the viewer has with the picture.Shot with D300 and 105 AF Macro lens.

HDR attempt

This picture is my first attempt at HDR photography. I used a tripod and bracketed seven exposures. I then fed the pictures to Photomatix software which combined the exposures to produce the final image with a high dynamic range. I adjusted the photo further in lightroom. The picture was taken at the schoolhouse in the Cradle of Forestry on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Over the weekend

For my Digital imaging class I am required to submit a self-promotional photo. I decided that I wanted a picture of me outdoors, because this best represents who I am at heart.

I used a Nikon D300 with a 18-200 lens (at about 50mm), pocket wizards, a light stand, and a 285 flash with white paper to diffuse the light. I took the picture around 4:00pm to reduce contrast a little bit.

Waterfalls in Glacier, Montana

These images were taken while hiking at Glacier National Park this past August. I used a D300 with a 17-200 variable aperture lens. I used a neutral density filter to increase the exposure time, and a tripod with cable release.
